The previous (and very first) Dolby processor was about 4 times the size of this 361, and had
rather cumbersome record / replay switching. Actually it was though a stereo device, whereas
these later and smaller units were a single mono record / replay audio 'channel'. So, if you
had a 16 track recorder you needed 16 of these units (at about £500 each - 1970's money). As
this was a great deal of cash, The Cat 22 modules (which were the Dolby processors) were
soon made available in more compact and cost efficient multiple rack units.

The 361 though remained in production for many years, and stereo pairs were to be found in
most record cutting suites or indeed anywhere where stereo music was being 'seriously'
recorded.
